The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that men are significantly less likely than women to see a GP over the course of a year (77.4% compared to 87.2%). When men do have a concern, research also shows three in four avoid the GP all-together, with more than half believing their problems will simply go away on their own. As a result, Australian men live, on average, four years fewer than Australian women. As we move through our 40s, 50s, and 60s, the ‘invisible’ risks increase. High blood pressure and cholesterol don’t always have early symptoms yet they are key drivers of cardiovascular disease. Thankfully, they can be monitored and managed when caught early. This also applies to bowel cancer and prostate health. By 50, having a conversation with your GP can be a life-saving act. MAN TO MAN: The Conversation That Saves Lives In Australia, we pride ourselves on being built tough. We’re meticulous with the maintenance of our cars and tools, yet when it comes to our own engine, many men adopt a ‘wait until it breaks’ mentality. This June, with Men’s Health Week front and centre, it’s time to check-in with your GP and yourself. All it takes is one conversation to make a big difference. 8 -14 JUN 2026 Mens Health Week - Mens Health Week - Mens Health Week - A check-up isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s proactive maintenance. “We see a lot of wives and partners coming in on behalf of their husbands when they’re sick,” says O’Loughlin’s pharmacist, Annalise Forsyth. “It’s so much better to come in yourself. We can check blood pressure, monitor diabetes, recommend a personalised supplement plan for long-term immune strength and even provide you with an opportunity to trial our sleep apnoea machine at home,” she adds. While staying active and eating well are important, true longevity is built on a foundation of clinical data. Don’t wait for a breakdown to book an appointment. Taking ownership of your health today is one of the most important things you can do. Not only could it save your life, it helps protect the future of those who love and rely on you. stivesvillage.com.au VILLAGE LIFE 22
Owning This Chapter For many Australian women, it can be hard to connect the dots during the onset of perimenopause. Seeking support when you feel unlike yourself can make all the difference. Expert guidance “We invite women and their partners to come in and discuss perimenopause to better understand the many ways to navigate this journey together. You’re not alone.” - Annalise Forsyth, Pharmacist. O’Loughlin’s Medical Pharmacy, Level 2, Shop 126, 9440 0030 “Think of perimenopause as the prologue to menopause,” says Annalise. “While menopause is defined as having been 12 months since your last period, perimenopause is the lead-up phase – so irregular cycles, brain fog and hot flushes are some of the symptoms you may experience.” While the experience can be uncomfortable for some, the team at O’Loughlin’s pharmacy can help women manage and better understand their symptoms. “We’re always happy for you to come in and have a chat about your experience,” explains Annalise. “Generally the best treatments are hormonal treatments via prescription, but we have supplements that people have found to be quite helpful.” O’Loughlin’s Perimenopause Power-Ups Red Clover isoflavones relieve a range of symptoms. Promensil Peri, 60 tabs, $43.99. Hops and Sage provide comprehensive, multi-symptom herbal support. Bioceuticals Menoplus, 60 tabs, $39.99. Sage and Ziziphus tackle sweats and restless moods. Herbs of Gold Menopause relief, 60 tabs, $49.99. Black Cohosh manages multiple perimenopause health concerns. Remifemin, 100 tabs, $25.99. Perimenopause can start as early as your late 30s. Just remember - it’s not a diagnosis, it’s a transition. For up to a decade, the signals and shifts of perimenopause can appear without much warning, and are often mistaken for something else altogether – stress, burnout, anxiety, or just the demands of a busy life. If symptoms like night sweats, sleep disruptions, mood shifts or brain fog sound familiar, it’s important to see your GP. You may also consider reviewing your thyroid health, bone density, and cardiovascular health. There are non-hormonal options, natural therapies and lifestyle adjustments to explore with your doctor. You aren’t expected to navigate this shift alone. Support is available. AUTUMN / WINTER 26 23
Invest in Good Sleep There are few greater pleasures in Winter than a bed that’s worth climbing into. From the right doona to the perfect layer ratio – it all adds up to an experience you’ll look forward to every single evening. While better bedding can create a better night’s sleep, many of us are still using sheets and blankets well past their use by date. Consider this your guide to creating a bedroom environment that feels just as beautiful as it looks this Winter. Start With Your Doona “Treating yourself to fresh bedding is the perfect way to start a new season”, says Kristy Williams of Bed Bath N’ Table. The foundation of a good sleep in Winter starts with selecting the right doona. For Australian Winters, a medium to heavy weight fill (whether it’s a duck down, wool or quality synthetic materials) will provide the warmth you need without leading to overheating. “For added versatility, a trans-seasonal or combination 2in1 quilt is a great option,” adds Kristy. Best of all, a well-cared for doona can last up to five years or more. A Little Pillow Talk “New pillows can elevate the look of your bed and deliver the support needed for a great night’s sleep” explains Kristy. “If your pillows are looking flat though, it may be time for a refresh.” For sidesleepers, a firmer loft pillow can provide increased support, while back sleepers often find success with pillows that are medium in height. These keep the neck aligned without pushing it forward. While experts recommend replacing pillows every one or two years, you can invest in a protector if you’re not quite ready to part with your pillow just yet. “Using a pillow protector is a simple yet effective way to extend the life of your pillow, keeping it fresher for longer,” adds Kristy. A New Lease On Sleep Extend the life of your pillows and doona by having them professionally dry cleaned. This not only removes buildup of allergens, it can restore loft, and keep your bedding feeling fresh. stivesvillage.com.au VILLAGE LIFE 24
A Masterclass in Considered Layering A beautifully made bed is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and it starts with layering. “Plush textures like brushed cotton, velvet, wool, and faux fur layer beautifully,” says Kristy. “During the cooler months, versatile layers that can be easily mixed-andmatched are a must. Something as simple as a blanket or coverlet can make all the difference,” she adds. Finish with two or three cushions in tonal or textured fabrics, as these will help to bring the whole look together and give your bedroom a hotel-worthy finish. “A freshly styled bed can change the entire personality of your bedroom. Embrace the art of Winter layering with tonal patterns and textures to breathe new life into your sanctuary.” – Jane Cantwell, Bed Bath N’ Table Store Manager, Level 1, Shop 22, 9983 1911 Style tips Pictured on left page: Bed Bath N’ Table Morgan & Finch Fabian flannelette quilt cover set, sage, from $99.99. The Timing Game When selling or finding your perfect home in St Ives, nothing beats local knowledge. In partnership with Marshall’s Property Group, here are the insights that matter most this Winter. Cruise Into Summer Whether you’re contemplating a cruise in 2027 or considering the ultimate staycation with your nearest and dearest, there’s plenty on offer for those seeking a getaway under the warmth of the Australian sun. Now is the perfect time to secure your 2027 cruise. Scenic’s ‘Jewels of Europe’ river cruise is a 15-day luxury cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. Sailing along the Rhine, Main and Danube, you’ll enjoy their all-inclusive fine dining experiences and immersive shore excursions. Looking for something closer to home? A weekend escape to Bannisters is always a fan favourite. Take your pick between laidback Mollymook or the sparkling waters of Port Stephens, both within three hours of Sydney. Luxeworld Travel Level 2, Shop 131, 9983 1699. Have you been thinking of selling recently? When it comes to Sydney’s Upper North Shore, holding onto your property until Spring can be a trade-off between visual appeal and financial risk. While waiting for September to roll around allows for Ku-ringgai’s famous gardens and natural light to truly shine, and thereby maximising your property’s ‘emotional premium’, this time of year also has the power to attract peak buyer volume. Selling in Winter during the July or August period however can offer a strategic advantage by avoiding the high inventory competition of Spring and the looming threat of even further RBA interest rate hikes. These of course, could slash buyer borrowing power by mid-year. Ultimately, if your home’s ‘wow factor’ is its outdoor lifestyle, it might be prudent to hold for the Spring bloom. If you have a high-quality indoor sanctuary, listing in Winter could capture a captive and motivated market before the credit environment potentially tightens even further. Committed to selling? The Winter market favours warm minimalism, so consider replacing sterile whites with a palette of soft off-whites, earthy tones, and deep plum accents to create a cozy, high-end sanctuary. Focus on tactile textures like heavy knits and warm timbers while using layered amber lighting to combat seasonal gloom. Add your final touch with winter-ready outdoor spaces that showcase a lifestyle that remains vibrant despite the cooler temperatures.
