4 TOWNS AND VILLAGES OF THE UPPER HUNTER ABERDEEN Located on the New England Highway, midway between Muswellbrook and Scone, Aberdeen was among the first settlements in the Upper Hunter. Established more than 180 years ago, Aberdeen is steeped in its Scottish heritage, taking its name from the Earl of Aberdeen, a friend of early settler and former British MP Thomas Macqueen. The annual ‘Aberdeen Highland Games’ are held each year on the first weekend in July and sees a colourful gathering of Scottish clans, pipe bands, highland dancers, heavylifting event competitors, as well as state and interstate tug-of-war teams come together to celebrate the Upper Hunter’s Scottish and Celtic history. Just a few kilometres east of Aberdeen, Lake Glenbawn is very popular for camping, boating, skiing and other water activities and boasts an abundance of fish, including Bass, Golden Perch, Murry Cod and Trout. MUSWELLBROOK Muswellbrook is located 90 minutes from Newcastle in the heart of the Upper Hunter, making it an ideal base from which to explore the region. Steeped in history, you’ll discover historic buildings, grand country homes and Jacaranda-lined streets. Muswellbrook is a powerhouse of new energy projects, mining and agriculture. The town has also developed a reputation for producing award-winning wine, olives, and delicious cheeses that can be enjoyed at local restaurants and at the farm gate. Every two years in September, Muswellbrook hosts the ‘The Great Cattle Dog Muster’. A celebration of the Australian Cattle Dog’s origins in the Upper Hunter, the event draws visitors from throughout the region, across Australia, and overseas. Muswellbrook also boasts the Upper Hunter’s Regional Arts Centre, home to the Max Waters Collection and the prestigious Muswellbrook Art Prize. DENMAN Nestled amid vineyards, horse studs, and olive groves, Denman is the Upper Hunter’s epicentre for local wine and produce. The Denman district also boasts an impressive array of cafes and restaurants to satisfy all tastes, ranging from pub grub, pavement cafes, a la carte dining, cellar doors with restaurants, through to delicious antipasto platters. CASSILIS West of Merriwa on the Golden Highway is the heritage-listed town of Cassilis. Settled in the 1830’s, Cassilis then covered a large area and was the base for the local police district and part of the Dalkeith Station. The township has plenty of country charm and is rich in agriculture. In September the region is covered by fields of Canola. MERRIWA Situated midway between Dubbo and Newcastle on the Golden Highway, Merriwa is favourite stopover for travellers heading to Mudgee, Dunedoo or Dubbo in the west, or to Willow Tree in the north. Settled in 1839, Merriwa is a flourishing agriculture centre that celebrates its rich agricultural history with the Merriwa Springtime Show in September and the Festival of the Fleeces on the June long weekend (don’t miss the ‘Running of the Sheep’ – resplendent in their red socks!). Built in the town centre in 1847, the Old Colonial Cottage houses the Merriwa Historical Society and Museum.

8 About 20 years ago, Karen Williams decided to try her hand at winemaking. She got her qualifications, then purchased a property called Roseglen at Denman and supplied grapes to Rosemount and Arrowfield, while keeping a small parcel of grapes for her first label, ‘JUUL’. In 2005, the Williams family purchased Hollydene vineyard, then bought Wybong and sold Roseglen. From there, both the Wybong and Hollydene vineyards were run under the banner and brand Hollydene. Hollydene supplied Arrowfield Estate Wines (known as Hollydene Estate now) with grapes until it closed in 2010. That’s when Karen purchased the Arrowfield winery and then the renovations began to bring Hollydene Estate to life. The renovations completely transformed the old winery. There was plenty of history incorporated in the renovations, including timber from the original Bowman’s Crossing Bridge that once crossed the Hunter River and from the wharf at Goat Island in Sydney. 10 years on, Vines Restaurant continues to blossom and Hollydene now has 17 varieties of wine. Hollydene is well known for its Semillon, Chardonnay, Verdelho and Shiraz which are all produced from three of the oldest vineyards in the Upper Hunter Valley being Arrowfield, Hollydene and Wybong. Hollydene Business Manager Emma Williams came on board in 2013 and helped set the business up. “Since then it has grown from a small family business to a flourishing business with a focus on good food and wine. “We have the venue and the quality, and everyone is welcome through the door. “Being on the Golden Highway is a bonus for us. A lot of travellers stop in and make this their regular stop. It’s also a good central point for family or friends to meet between Sydney and out west.” Amanda Parker, the Venue and Events Manager said there is something for everyone. “We have the cellar door that offers a range of vintages. Our wine list changes a couple of times a year using our whole warehouse of vintages. You can do tastings for $5, have a cheeseboard, coffee, and cake, whatever you like. “All of our staff know the wines, so they understand how to match our wine with the food in Vines Restaurant. PADDOCK TO PLATE Situated on the Golden Highway against a backdrop of beautiful vineyards and rolling hills, Hollydene Estate and Vines Restaurant at Jerrys Plains was established in 2014 by the Williams Family and is a regular pit stop for many travelling through the Upper Hunter. 15 NATIONAL PARKS OF THE UPPER HUNTER BURNING MOUNTAIN NATURE RESERVE Burning Mountain Nature Reserve contains a 6000-year-old, naturally occurring underground burning coal seam. Signposted with information panels, a guided walking track leads from the council car park through previously burnt areas to a viewing platform where the ever-burning coal seam and exhaust vents can be seen. The 4.5km return walk is located 20km north of Scone and takes around 90 minutes to complete. TOWARRI NATIONAL PARK Just a 20-minute drive from Scone, Towarri National Park and Wingen Maid Nature Reserve are a bird-watchers delight. Yellow-Tufted Honeyeaters, Kingfishers, and Glossy Black Cockatoos are just some of the species to be found. At the Washpools Camping and Picnic Areas on the bank of Middle Brook, travellers can cool off in the culturally significant water hole or hike over the Liverpool Range. As you drive to the park, look for the Wingen Maid protruding from the sandstone cliffs. GOULBURN RIVER NATIONAL PARK Goulburn River National Park is located west of Muswellbrook, south of Merriwa and east of Mudgee. The Goulburn River meanders between rugged sandstone cliffs honeycombed with caves, while wide sandy riverbanks offer easy walking trails. Kangaroos, wombats, emus, red-neck wallabies, turquoise parrots and wedge-tailed eagles are among the multitude of native wildlife you might see. There are also plenty of activities, including camping or picnicking at Spring Gully or Big River, and walking trails such as Lees Pinch Lookout. Walk along the Goulburn River and stand under The Drip on a hot day or check out the Aboriginal rock art at Hands on Rock. You can also take a dip in the swimming holes or bring your canoe for a paddle on the river. WOLLEMI NATIONAL PARK New South Wales’ largest wilderness area, Wollemi National Park is a spectacular maze of deep canyons, rocky cliffs, and undisturbed forest. Access Wollemi via Bulga and the Putty Road, or via Denman through Baerami. The park is home to a rich variety of species, including eastern grey kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, gliders, geckos and snakes. View its breathtaking scenery of sandstone ridges and escarpments from the road along the Bylong Valley Way and the Widden Valley. Stop for a roadside break at the Phipps Cutting or Honeysuckle Creek picnic areas. Reconnect with nature.
16 NATIONAL PARKS OF THE UPPER HUNTER BARRINGTON TOPS NATIONAL PARK Reconnect with nature. The World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops National Park lies between Scone, Dungog and Gloucester. The Upper Hunter provides a western gateway into the park from Scone. Over 390 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and insects can be found in this wonderful wilderness area. Enjoy the scenic drive along Barrington Tops Forrest Road and stop off at any of the lookouts for fantastic views over the Hunter Valley. The Barrington Tops plateau has a host of facilities, including numerous picnic areas and short walks for day travellers. Camping facilities are available at Polblue, Devil’s Hole, Gummi Falls and Manning River. A range of longer hiking trails exist throughout the park and the majestic snow-covered ranges of the Barrington Tops are a must-see in winter. With a highest peak of 1586m above sea level, snow may be possible at any time of the year but is more likely to occur in the colder months of May and June. The best spots to experience the snow are at the higher elevations on the plateau, accessible by vehicle on the Barrington Tops Forest Road. The main access road is steep and unsealed and can become very slippery in ice or snow. 4WD vehicles with good tyres and high ground clearance are better suited to the hazardous conditions, however the road may be closed to all vehicles at short notice to ensure the safety of visitors. To increase your chances of finding settled snow on the ground, check with the Bureau of Meteorology’s (BoM) weather forecast before you go or visit the Barrington Tops Snow Chasers page on Facebook for the latest updates. Weather conditions at Barrington Tops can change very quickly, so always be prepared. As a minimum take spare warm, dry clothing, blankets, food and water.

20 It’s had a facelift and an owner or two over the years, but the latest publicans have been pouring the beers for the last six months and they couldn’t be happier. “I moved up from Melbourne to Scone in 2017,” said owner Georgia Henderson. “I fell pregnant with my daughter mid-2023 and I was working in an airplane workshop at the time. I thought it probably wasn’t the best place to be while pregnant and that’s when the Linga Longa opportunity came up. “Initially we thought, ‘this is insane’, but we then realised if we were our own bosses, we could make our own rules.” So, Georgia and her partner Ethan took the plunge and started managing the pub in early 2024. “While there was the pressure of opening a new business, we knew we were opening a business that the community already loved. “We’re not in centre of town so we still have to entice people to come out here, but we already had that customer base, so we just had to get on the wave and learn to surf really quickly! “This venue is stunning; it ticks all the boxes. “It’s a simple venue, we don’t have accommodation or pokies, so the focus is just on good food and cold drinks, and so far, simplicity is working well. Everyone is welcome, including your dogs and the kids.” Georgia said when it came to the food, she didn’t want to serve standard pub grub. “I told everyone who worked in our kitchen that I didn’t want it to be standard pub grub, I knew we could do better than that. “There’s nothing wrong with schnitty’s and burgers, but I wanted us to do something different and do it well.” When you head to the Linga Longa you’ll find a menu of Bigs and Smalls. Starting off with warm focaccia bread with beetroot feta, romesco cream cheese and balsamic olive oil and lemon pepper calamari, then the Bigs include a beef or chicken burger, chicken supreme or a beautiful local steak with a side of honey glazed carrots, confit potato, soubise sauce and gravy. “Our meat is all from Dymocks in Aberdeen, we love them. For our seafood we go through Hammo who does the seafood delivery in town every week so it’s as fresh as possible. Our fruit and veg comes from Millers Produce. Where freshness matters it had to be local. “The steaks are awesome, they’re so good. Dan makes pasta a pasta of the week, and fish of the week. We have a set menu, but we have specials that rotate too. “Dan Lawson our chef is a legend. He’s young but he’s rare. He takes a lot of pride in what he’s doing, and he wants to make that kitchen his own. “We’ve got a great team, and they all know what they’re doing. “It’s excellent food and you can stay around for as long as you want – you can Linga Longa!” Why not Linga, a little Longa Situated on the Pages River at the base of the Barrington Tops at Gundy, the Linga Longa Inn has been one of the Upper Hunter’s favourite locals for years. 28 Michael Reid and his partner Nellie Dawes were in their 40s when they decided they wanted to go back to their roots. They started looking for a forever home in the country about 24 years ago, looking as far afield as Tasmania but right under their noses Bobadil House at Murrurundi came up for sale through a relative. “It was Nellie’s great, great, great, great Grandfather’s house and it’s been in the extended family since the late 1800s. So, we bought it in 2005 and the longer we’ve lived here we realised just how much we love it. We started to gingerly develop a gallery here and look at it now.” Michael and Nellie had already established successful galleries in Surry Hills in Sydney and Berlin in Germany. Establishing a contemporary gallery in Murrurundi felt right. The grounds of Bobadil House became the Michael Reid Gallery which is now home to the contemporary gallery, a gift shop, café and gardens where you can easily spend an afternoon soaking up the sunshine and the atmosphere. Bobadil House is nestled behind towering hedges and London plane trees. As part of the rejuvenation of the grounds 80 truckloads of privet and blackberry bushes were removed making way for dormant agapanthus, iris, rosemary and hibiscus plants to grow and flower again. The Big Brown Dog Kiosk and the store are in the sandstone ruins of an old cellblock that was hidden behind truckloads of blackberry and privet. “We started the Kiosk about seven years ago. The idea was that we wanted to bring people out and get them to slow down. I don’t want people to come and breeze through and leave. I want them to have some beautiful homemade food, see a good exhibition and go through an interesting concept store – it’s a whole experience. “We curate our concept store in the same way that we curate an exhibition. We only work with interesting brands or brands that fit into our ethos which is trying to have all Australian made and designed. “We’re not here to sell you throws or lampshades, we want to sell interesting, original objects.” The Big Brown Dog is the Michael Reid Gallery’s own retail brand with everything from chutneys and jams, to candles and household items. The gallery was built in late 2017 adjacent to the old cellblock. “This Gallery is focused on nationally significant regional artists. We try to work with artists who are not urban or live in regional Australia. We have a fair bit of First Nations and artists who have representation and are well known. “We have had leading Australian artists such as Adam Cullen, David Bromley, Noel McKenna, Robert Jacks, Chris Langlois, Paul Ryan and Sally Gabori have all mounted solo exhibitions here too.” The gallery rotates every month or so and about 12 to 18 months ahead. Michael and Nellie agree their spot of paradise, hidden on the edge of the New England Highway is a great stop for locals and visitors alike. “Generally speaking, geographically half of the people who stop are from northern NSW so Moree, Narrabri, it’s about four hours’ drive and it’s another four hours to Sydney so it’s geographically handy. “Most locals are within an hour and a half drive so it’s a beautiful getaway for lunch or a even a day trip.” AMONG THE TREES An Escape Hidden behind the trees just off the New England Highway, the Michael Reid Gallery not only offers contemporary art, but it also has homemade baked goods that you can enjoy in the garden and a store with only Australian made unique gifts. The Michael Reid Gallery, Kiosk & Store are open 9:30am to 4pm every Thurs to Sun. 33 SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER 11AM TO 4PM OGILVIE STREET, DENMAN Meet the Upper Hunter winemakers, regional distillers and local producers, featuring over 40 bespoke artisans. WOOD CHOPPING - FOOD VANS - KIDS AREA LIVE MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT WITH MITCH TAMBO, NATHAN LAMONT, REIGAN AND TRAVIS COLLINS muswellbrook.nsw.gov.au/denman-wine-food-film-affair in partnership with
34 Each year, gourmet street stalls and award-winning local wineries would line Ogilvie Street that closed for the day of the event, allowing attendees to wander from stall to stall, tasting and eating their way down the street. It’s been six years since the popular wine and food festival has been held after the pandemic put it on hold. But it’s back November 2, 2024, with a twist. The event will not only celebrate local wine, produce and providores, it will also feature Muswellbrook Shire Council’s Blue Heeler Film Festival with the awards night, music, street theatre and screenings of the film entrants on the 1st and 2nd November for the inaugural Denman Wine Food and Film Affair. 2024 will be the 11th year for the Blue Heeler Film Festival. The theme is ‘Country’ aiming to inspire films that celebrate the beauty of landscapes whether it be historical, environmental, personal, or a spiritual connection people have with the land or their country. Festival Director and project manager for the Denman Wine Food and Film Affair Stephen Wright said they decided to build the 2024 film festival into the Wine and Food Affair to elevate the event even further for its comeback. “Being Festival Director for the last few years I really tried to look at an opportunity to give more access to the finalist films. We have the awards night but building the film festival into the larger event gives us a platform to screen all the finalists throughout the event exposing new and emerging filmmakers to a much larger audience. “The awards night has become a big event on our calendar, a must attend, so this year we are taking it out to Two Rivers, and it will be quite spectacular.” A $150,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Open Streets Program, led by Transport for NSW, enabled the collaboration between Muswellbrook Shire Council and the Denman Chamber of Commerce to combine the two events into a not-to-be-missed weekend of festivities. “The festival has a place in the heart of locals and in partnering with the Denman Chamber of Commerce we are working hard to make sure we include all the elements that people know and love from the original event while taking it to the next level. “It will follow the similar format of the last event in 2019. We are however expecting much larger crowds, there were about 8,000 at the last event and we’re expecting to see about 10,000 this time. “The focus is always on the local vendors and wineries. Two Rivers, Hollydeen and Small Forest will be the wineries part of this event and there are some emerging gourmet businesses and food providers in the region that will be featured quite prominently, and we have expanded it out to cover the entire Hunter region,” said Stephen. The event will showcase a lineup of both local and headline musicians, including an artist with a long history with the event scheduled to perform. Muswellbrook Shire Mayor Steve Reynolds has been a long-time resident of the region and is excited to see the event back on the calendar. “The Festival is going to be bigger, and better this year. “I would encourage anyone to get out here, it’s going back to its roots and its fantastic Council, and the Chamber have decided to bring it back. “Incorporating it with the Blue Heeler Film Festival will bring a different niche to the festival as well, because we have the films and the actors there, so it’s one big celebration.” The Denman Wine Food and Film Affair is on 2 November on Ogilvie Street. Best of all, the event is FREE. POPULAR EVENT MAKES A RETURN The Denman Wine and Food Affair has a long history in the Upper Hunter, with the first ever event held in 2004. It started with 11 stalls and between 500-800 people came, and each year it grew, getting increasingly popular with thousands of people travelling from all over to attend when word got out about how wonderful it was.
