JULY 2022
Sydney Youth Musical Theatre acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we gather, rehearse, and tell our stories. We recognise their continuing connection to land, water, and community, and pay respect to their Elders past and present. We extend this respect to any Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with us.
When our application to stage Disney’s enchanting production of ‘The Little Mermaid’ at Parramatta’s Riverside Theatre was met with success, I knew there was only one duo of artistic genius who could bring this magical tale to life: James and Callum Tolhurst-Close. With their unrivalled expertise, they assembled a remarkable team hailing from Newcastle, including the talented Harry Lyddiard (Assistant Director), and the choreography visionaries of Kristy Hooper (Choreographer) and Elise Simpson (Assistant Choreographer). Together, they formed a collective force that has made waves in the world of theatre. COVID-19 prevented James and Callum staging Kinky Boots for SYMT, so I am thrilled to work with them again. This extraordinary production of ‘The Little Mermaid’ has been the pinnacle of my role as President of SYMT thus far, and I owe it all to the incredible team who have made it possible. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to every member of the SYMT Committee – Bruce, Paul, Craig, Adam, Belinda, James, Matt, and Dylan – for their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts. I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our outgoing committee member, Claire, for her exceptional service to our youth. While bidding farewell to Claire, we warmly welcome Michelle and look forward to the creative contributions she will bring. Working with this cast has been an absolute delight - they radiate joy, energy, and a boundless enthusiasm that has made every moment truly unforgettable. Special thanks are in order for the masterful work of our lighting and sound teams; the creative brilliance of Belinda, James, and Michelle (and other supportive parents) in crafting exquisite costumes; Kirsten, our out of this world makeup; Kaz for supplying and expertly styling the wigs; Wendy’s attention to detail with props; and the exceptional set designs brought to life by Paul, Bruce, and James. We are also deeply grateful to Kent Powell for generously supplying the magnificent sets, Adam for his sensational marketing skills, Bob Williams for his remarkable set painting, backstage crew and Craig and Adam for their technical expertise. A huge thank you for the invaluable contributions of Grant and Adam capturing the essence of our production through their skilled photography and editing. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the SYMT families who have tirelessly supported us in bringing this production to the Riverside Theatre. Without your unwavering dedication and assistance, none of this would have been possible. We are eternally grateful for the opportunity given to us by Riverside Theatre to showcase the boundless talent of SYMT. While SYMT typically stages two musicals per year, catering to our Senior (14 to 25 years) and Junior (10 to 18 years) members, we remain adaptable to the cast requirements of each production. Looking ahead to the 2024 season, we are thrilled to announce that it promises to be an exhilarating journey filled with excitement, magic, and extraordinary performances. Stay tuned for the 2024 season announcement! Chrissy Stimson President Sydney Youth Musical Theatre (SYMT)
Sydney Youth Musical Theatre’s Production of ‘The Little Mermaid’ has been an exciting and colourful production to direct. There was a powerhouse of talent that arrived in the audition room, and it has been a privilege to work with some of Sydney’s finest young professionals and youth. It is a testament to SYMT to see the skill and dedication that members - old and new - bring to the rehearsal room. Every production that I direct is an extraordinary journey of growth, and SYMT’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ is no exception. Our cast, you have worked hard to perfect complex choreography, challenging harmony and develop vibrant, intriguing characters, all whilst staying upright and gliding across the stage on wheelie shoes. My favourite part of being a teacher is witnessing the passion of these young performers firsthand. I have been fortunate to bring together a professional creative team of artists, all of whom I have separately known for a long time and respect immensely. I have watched them lead our cast with a clear vision from day one. Kristy and Elise, you have created choreography that perfectly marries traditional Broadway class with a sharp and fresh flavour. I can’t fault your professionalism and understanding of the music theatre dance genre and we’ve certainly had some laughs along the way! Harry, working with you has been very special as we come full circle from The Little Mermaid JR. 10 years ago. I am so proud to have witnessed you grow into a brilliant and clever creative, who truly understands how to convey a story on stage and do it in meticulous detail. The show wouldn’t be what is without you. Callum, thank you for your care and contribution in bringing this show to life, not only with hours sitting at the piano, but through an unfathomable understanding of the intricacies of putting together music such as this. Thank you for the support, guidance and time you have given our young performers. I can’t thank the five of you enough for the love you have given to this underwater adventure - stars (or shells) definitely aligned for this one. Thank you to the committee for choosing and trusting us to bring this story to life for SYMT’s premiere at Riverside Theatres! Chrissy, your trust (particularly in me) has been immeasurable and humbling. I have been lucky to have a friend like you catch me every step of the way, and your excel spreadsheets are second to none. I would like to dedicate this production to anyone who feels different to the world around them - may you find your legs, and your dreams come true. As our audience, I hope that you are transported to the colourful world under the sea, and join our cast in living out this magical story! James Tolhurst-Close Director
Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea”, “Kiss the Girl”, and “Part of Your World.” Ariel, King Triton’s youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colourful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.
