First off, a big welcome to our new members Michael, Angela, Jacinta and Belinda and welcome back to Paul who has re-joined us again. It’s great to have you on board at Fremantle Camera Club, one of the oldest camera clubs in WA, and hopefully before the end of the year we can get a few social events happening that will allow you to meet other members. We’ve had a few interesting events and outcomes at the Club of the past two months, firstly, with Clinton Bradbury running a fantastic Dance/Ballet workshop early in Sept with our two dancers Chloe and Amelia; and secondly, members of the Club being very successful at the Royal Perth Show in the Photography competition. Congratulations to Jan Robinson who got a 3rd in Open, a Merit in Rural and had 16 Acceptances overall in the Show. Congratulations also go to Jeff Spickett who got a Merit in Rural as well. And for everyone else who got an Acceptance into the show, Well Done. By the way, the Royal Show exhibition is on all this week and if you get a chance, drop by and check out the wonderful images. Finally, we had reasonable success in the recent PrintWest competition run by the WAPF, where we placed 6th overall in the state of WA. We came 9th in the Colour section, 6th in the Mono and 6th overall. Congrats to our members who continue to demonstrate the strength of our club the WA region. The club meets at 7.30pm on the first and third Tuesday of every month (except January) at the North Fremantle Community Hall: 4 Thompson Road, North Fremantle (Harvest Road end). See the map at the bottom of our home page: www. fremantlecameraclub.com. The first Tuesday is an educational evening and the third Tuesday is competition night. In addition there are social outings organised to improve and share our photography skills. See information in this month’s Freographic and on the website. Guests are always welcome. Become a club member today! Welcome to Freographic August/September 2022 issue President’s Report
Sept 2022 FREOGRAPHIC NEWS 2 Pat Hallaran President In honour of life member Grace Munday and her legacy to the club. The winner of best landscape image overall for August print or digital was Wheatbelt Storm by Ben Clark. He received the perpetual Grace Munday trophy, presented by Michael Munday and Tony Hewitt. News One of our first Education presenters this year was Martine Perret who has a wonderful portfolio of aerials and Indigenous elders on display at the Margaret River Arts Festival, which I was lucky enough to visit last weekend. What an opportunity to visit a number of fantastic galleries and artists across the spectrum of creativity. I never cease to be amazed at the innovation, imagination and creativity of some people (and yes, I did take a few sneaky snapshots to stimulate my inspiration). I shared one of Martine’s Facebook posts in our Club FB site that highlights one of the amazing events she ran on that same weekend, which was a projection of her images onto a peppercorn tree on the property where her studio is located on.. WOW. Looking forward to catching up with everyone soon in person, and don’t forget to get out and get that amazing Abstract image for our next competition in October. If you have any questions about Club, competitions, membership or any other events, please contact the Club Secretary or myself. All the results of PrintWest 2022 are now available on the WAPF website: https://www.wapf.org. au/index.php/competitions/ competition-galleries The members that received acceptances for the Perth Nationals where: Ben Clark Lawrie Belin Jeff Spickett Christine Chester Helen Newnham Jan Robinson Penny kirkland-Smith Steve Barnes
August Education Report FREOGRAPHIC Sept 2022 Our education night was a very interesting and interactive evening. Des Lewis showed us the many aspects of using our smart phones for photography. We learnt the varying tools available on our phones. So many new settings, that I think a lot of the members were unaware of their use. Even those that are very experienced with their cameras were intrigued. Des showed us how to use the Snapseed app for editing, along with a few other tools available on our mobiles. It was wonderful to see everyone interacting and learning as a club. Hopefully Des can come back to show a night of videography soon. He is an inspiring presenter and it was a pleasure to hear his lecture on smart phone photography. You can follow Des on; https://mondophotography.com.au https://www.facebook.com/smartphonephotographywa/ 3 AUGUST EDUCATION REPORT Marlene Bishop Education Officer
Sept 2022 FREOGRAPHIC Sept Education Report We were fortunate to have Clinton Bradbury again as our guest presenter along with ballerina models Chloe and Amelia. Camera Electronic generously loaned Clinton some of the gear for the night so we could all have a turn along with some of Clintons and Adams gear. This was an interactive night with our own cameras. Clinton demonstrated how to use off camera flash with wireless triggers on our cameras and interact with the models. Guiding the models where and how to stand, along with where to place the lighting. With variations of lighting soft boxes and globe colours. It was a great insight into the results with flash photography and the images of the models. Clinton is a talented presenter. He has a very positive and patient approach to his demonstrations. We look forward to another presentation further down the track. FREOGRAPHIC Sept 2022 4 OCTOBER EDUCATION NIGHT 5 Andrew Davoll will be our guest presenter on Tuesday 4th October at 7.30pm. Andrew’s work has been seen in Australian Geographic Nature Photographer. Fine Arts Photography Awards, Chronicle, Head On, Monochrome Awards and Silicone Republic to name a few. To Quote David’s words This will be a very insightful night to learn about Abstract photography and beyond the normal realms. Follow David on www.andrewdavoll.com/work October 4th Education Night Upcoming Education I am continually drawn to the patterns, textures and design of the natural and constructed world. It is here that I find the inspiration needed to create images that go beyond a depiction of reality. Learning to ‘see’ in a new way has been a process of discovery in which the ordinary becomes extraordinary as the wonder of life is revealed. This brings with it a sense of fun, of creating magical places, in making life a mystery and my journey into a creative pathway. Marlene Bishop Education Officer
Sept 2022 FREOGRAPHIC CLUB EXTRA 6 I thought I would write a few lines about the process of creating my image of elephants in the rain. I'm no expert at Photoshop but even just knowing the basics can be very satisfying. 1st - for the theme, we needed to find an individual tree in a landscape in some sort of weather event. I traipsed around Rottnest in the rain for a week and got plenty of rain and tree photos but nothing that looked special 2nd - so I looked through practically ALL my 1000s of photos and discovered this one from my phone photos - it appealed because you don't often think of elephants sheltering under a tree 3rd - I noticed the preceding photo was of the same landscape so I decided to include that as well 4th - I created a new canvas (File - New) and transferred both images on to it, adjusted them so they were seamless 5th - Turned them into black and white using Silver Efex plug-in, and a Rollei film type 6th - That just left me needing to add the rain. I chose a photo from Rottnest, cropped a rectangle, turned it into b&w with the same Rollei film processing as the main photo, laid it over the main photo, tipping it to slightly increase the slant of the rain, and finally reduced the opacity until I was happy with the effect. I hope that doesn't sound too complicated. Photoshop is so powerful that it can be off putting but the basics, including the use of layers, might be all you need. I hope this has been helpful. Nature Photography Classes – Speaker Series Have you ever wondered what and how photography professionals see or more of how they approach their work? Through the Nature Photography Classes Speaker Series, you will be able to see what goes on in their minds, within their cameras, and in the field as they bring to you some of their most impactful images, thoughts, and insights. The speaker series is a live opportunity to ask questions as part of a 90-minute web-based format. Join us as we talk to the leading nature and landscape photographers. FREOGRAPHIC Sept 2022 OCTOBER Abstract An abstract image. Abstract photography is a method of expressing ideas and emotions with photographed image elements without the intention of creating a traditional or realistic image. By avoiding and going beyond the usual representations of an object, scene, or any particular element, it reveals details that are normally ignored and triggers the viewer’s imagination. NOVEMBER Documentary Any subject [including people] photographed in Fremantle. The subject must be seen to be by virtue of appearance, style or use local to Fremantle. 21 SUBJECTS 2022 Club Subjects Fremantle Camera Club Competition nights are held the third Tuesday of each month. The subjects for the monthly competitions have been set by the Committee and are as follows: Please pay careful attention to the definitions.
