1 FREOGRAPHIC April 2023 Contact emails The following email addresses have been set up for FCC business. Secretary: secretary.fremantlecameraclub@gmail.com Treasurer: treasurer.fremantlecameraclub@gmail.com Freographic: editor.fremantlecameraclub@gmail.com Website: web.fremantlecameraclub@gmail.com Digital competition entries: fremantlecameraclub@gmail.com My word the year is getting away on us and nearly the end of April already. Some wonderful images have been coming through in the Competitions so far this year. The aggregated scores are all quite even across the different categories, with some notable figures starting to move quietly up the ladder. Some of our newer members are also staring to show some form, with consistent Awards of Silvers and Golds coming through, well done and hope to see more of your talents coming through. A big thanks to our judges over the past two months, Alan Carter in March, and Glen Moralee in April, who have reinforced some of the important aspects of getting your images to Award level and not just capturing those moments in time that the Judges often refer to as a “Record Shot”. From a personal point of view, I think both judges have provided an excellent critique on the images submitted, but definitely fell short on awarding any of my images the Golds I was expecting. But seriously, let’s get back to their feedback. If I was to highlight the main challenges that the judges have referred to in the past three months, the following come to mind. From providing better separation of (main) subjects, getting the depth of field appropriate for the image, providing an emphasis on lighting especially where it’s needed, cropping out un-needed parts of the image and particularly in having a strong ‘story’. The club meets at 7.30pm on the first and third Tuesday of every month (except January) at the North Fremantle Community Hall: 4 Thompson Road, North Fremantle (Harvest Road end). See the map at the bottom of our home page: www. fremantlecameraclub.com. The first Tuesday is an educational evening and the third Tuesday is competition night. In addition there are social outings organised to improve and share our photography skills. See information in this month’s Freographic and on the website. Guests are always welcome. April 2023 FREOGRAPHIC NEWS 2 Pat Hallaran President During the year we will all be exposed to approx. 60-80 images a month, that no doubt will vary in quality, characteristics, and artistic merit. Aside from the judge’s feedback, you will also have the opportunity to discuss with other club members their views on the images presented and gain insights on the work of others. As well as learning from others, equally we learn that photography is an art and not a science, and therefore there are no universal rights or wrongs. What one judge might love, another equally experienced judge may defiantly not love. Listening to a range of views on our images is an essential step in developing your photography and building confidence in it. For me (and hopefully many others), there are a couple of aspects I think I can improve on, aside from the typical judge’s feedback already mentioned. To move to high level Award status (i.e. Gold and Silver), does the image capture the attention of the viewer (i.e. some WOW factor or significance in the image that they have never seen before); and secondly, does the image provide some visual communication, some emotion or connection that resonates with the viewer. This ultimately is what they refer to as Art Photography. Although I’d have to say there is a caveat on that, and that is: I’d like to think that most images have been captured with a technical quality that is inherent in the craft of the photographer at Camera Club level. Although to Adam Smalley who took out the Open Colour and Mono Awards at the York Photographic Awards for 2023. Congratulations I’d also have to say some of my biggest stuff-ups have turned out to be amazingly special images .. hahah. Before signing off, for this month, big thanks to Marlene on organising the Education night presentations so far, Liz and Chris for the Supper service, and the rest of the committee who do a fab job keeping the club running. It goes without saying that the strength of the club doesn’t come from the individuals but the collective contribution of all of our members, so get involved and you might even find it helps your photography. Finally, congratulations to Adam Smalley who took out the Open Colour and Mono Awards at the York Photographic Awards for 2023. And a big congrats to Helen Rowbottom who took out the People’s Choice Award for March with her ‘Red Footed Booby’ image, and to Paul Anderson, one of our newest members who took out the People’s Choice Award in April with his “Smoko” image. Great to see some beautiful prints coming through in competition, so don’t be afraid to submit one of your images in Print, you might be another Award winner. Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography. FREOGRAPHIC April 2023 EDUCATION REPORT - APRIL 3 Education Report A vast and varied career as an editorial photographer. We heard of the many people and places he has photographed, along with their stories. Following Steve Fossett in his balloon, on his first solo navigation and the difficulty of capturing those moments. Photographing major events, athletes, celebrities, politicians and capturing moments in our history. How to interact with your subject, getting them to relax for a photo shoot. The way to take an image whilst trying to show their story. Having his images cut down from what he took to suit a newspaper spread. An interesting presenter, with so many stories and experiences. FREOGRAPHIC April 2023 Competition Rules See the club website for the full competition rules and responsibilities. In summary: All financial members of the club are eligible to enter monthly competitions to a maximum of one entry in each of the four competitions (print and digital sections, comprising open and set subject, in either colour or monochrome). All images must be the original photographic work of the member, but may be digitally enhanced. When entering the next competition remember that Gold and Silver award images may not be re-submitted in either digital or print format at another monthly competition. Similarly, images that come very close to resembling a previous Gold or Silver award entry are ineligible for entry in any section. Bronze and other entries may be converted to a higher standard based upon the judge’s comments and only re-submitted in one subsequent competition. Digital Images: Maximum digital image size is 1920(width) x 1080(height) pixels. A different ratio may be applied to the digital image (e.g. square or ‘letterbox’), provided the maximum sizes are not exceeded. There is no limit on resolution. Each digital image must be submitted as a JPEG file (*.jpg) and in sRGB profile and must have the following file title format: Digital Image Title_Open / Subject_Competitor Number.jpg e.g. Snowflakes_Open / Subject_151.jpg.
