A big thanks to our judges over the past two months, Colin White in April who made it under duress after having a bicycle accident, and Glen Moralee who tells us he’s now been judging at Fremantle for going on nine years. Along with some of fantastic images coming through in Competition, two of the main reasons I like to enter images into competition is to firstly, hear the feedback from our respective judges, and secondly, appreciate the amazing creativity that is presented from our club members. Having said that, it also occurs to me that these are not always mutually exclusive, but nor are they the same. We often hear and see examples of some images receiving very positive feedback, with a lower-than-expected Award and conversely, some images that receive less than substantial feedback with a much higher Award than expected. So how do I reconcile these. Firstly, I’m not at all offended by a judges negative or modest feedback (well maybe a little bit), as I understand they don’t always get what I was trying to show with an image (or how many hours I spent tweaking it). Secondly, its just one individual’s opinion, and as we have seen recently where some images that have been resubmitted (only have received a Bronze or no Award previously) have gone on to receive much higher Awards from another different judge. So, for me, it’s about a couple of other more valued perspectives. Primarily, enjoying the occasion and appreciating the many wonderful images that are presented, but most importantly, enjoying the overall occasion with likeThe club meets at 7.30pm on the first and third Tuesday of every month (except January) at the North Fremantle Community Hall: 4 Thompson Road, North Fremantle (Harvest Road end). See the map at the bottom of our home page: www. fremantlecameraclub.com. The first Tuesday is an educational evening and the third Tuesday is competition night. In addition there are social outings organised to improve and share our photography skills. See information in this month’s Freographic and on the website. Guests are always welcome. May 2024 FREOGRAPHIC NEWS 2 minded friends who also have a passion for photography. Again big thanks to Marlene on organising our Education night presentations so far this year, and great to have Steve Barnes presenting his work as a Geologist’s eye on the Landscape, which I found fascinating. I believe we have a big one next month (June 4th) with Alex Cearns presenting – cant wait for that one. Finally, thanks to everyone that’s ensuring our evenings are well organised with preparation of chairs and competition sheets and Print hanging, it makes such a difference when we have as many helpers as possible, so don’t hesitate to join in and offer a hand when needed. And don’t forget to thank Liz for her supper treats every meeting .. they are Yummo. FREOGRAPHIC May 2024 EDUCATION REPORT - APRIL 3 Education Report The discussion was based on Home Curation, seeing yourself as others see you. The ability to curate your own work whilst being able to recognise a successful image. An image might be something you loved or a memory, a travel photograph. Though to have a successful image, you need to think about an image that sparks curiosity, creates a story, asks a question or stays in the viewer’s mind. We were shown their failures and successes, and it gave us enthusiasm for improving our own failures. This was a very interesting and entertaining evening. With great conversational discissions and thought provoking ideas, along with a few laughs. Mark Greenland and Barbara Brown were our very interesting guest speakers for April. Marlene Bishop Education Officer May 2024 FREOGRAPHIC EDUCATION REPORT - MAY 4 Steve Barnes one of our club members gave a presentation in May. Photographing time: landscape through a geologist’s lens MAY Education Report After a 40 year career as a geologist, Steve has amassed a vast collection of landscape and geology photos from six continents. In his talk, he demonstrated the geologist’s superpower: being able to “see” deep time. The presentation gave you ways to see and capture landscapes from a different perspective: the fourth dimension. We were enlightened in the field of geology, the bedrocks, how weathering, erosion, and sediment affects the landscape. Steve explained how and why we see the variations in our landscapes. Giving us a better understanding of what image we might be trying to capture in the outdoors. Our members saw an array of areas that Steve has photographed, with explanations of the environments. Many questions were asked, and it might make us think next time when we are taking an image that he has given us a greater understanding of our environment. A very interesting night, one which I think our members were quietly surprised how it opened our minds to the world we live in and in our photography.

May 2024 FREOGRAPHIC 2024 SUBJECTS 22 2024 Club Subjects Fremantle Camera Club Competition nights are held the third Tuesday of each month. The subjects for the monthly competitions have been set by the Committee and are as follows: Please pay careful attention to the definitions. JULY Abstract Abstract - A pictorial and pleasing arrangement which are not recognisable as known objects communicating instead through lines, shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks. SEPTEMBER Monochrome (Something Round) Using monochrome photography to take a picture of something round, taking one single colour and using a range of tones of that colour to colourize an image. AUGUST Landscape (Panorama) A panoramic landscape is a photograph of natural scenery with land and sky based elements displayed in a pictorial fashion. People, boats and man-made structures may be present as incidental to the photograph. Traditionally a panoramic photo is either a 2:1 or a 3:1 ratio format. OCTOBER Sports (Movement) A picture featuring a person or people moving in some form of sporting event. Fast shutter speed; to freeze the action. (so it looks still) or a Slow shutter speed; to let the movement blur giving the feeling of speed or excitement. Panning; moving your camera along in time with the moving subject so they come out nicely in focus/sharp but the background blurs. This gives a feeling of movement and speed. NOVEMBER Close-Up/Macro (Wildflowers) Close-up or macro shot of Wildflowers where the captured subject is presented at a ratio of 1:1 or greater. The aim is to show enhanced details in common subjects that we may otherwise not notice. JUNE Unusual Shadows An image featuring shadow[s] which form an unusual or humorous shape or pattern. The cause of the shadow may be included but not featured.
