One of the most distinguishing hallmarks of Tennyson House is the curved elements of its concrete exterior. In doing this we not only created a strong and identifiable sense of address, but also softened the geometric form in a truly contemporary fashion. Landscaping also played a key role, alongside the use of muted materials like smooth concrete and black steel, to help integrate the façade seamlessly into the Elwood streetscape. Inside, natural stone finishes and flutedcabinetry details are real standout features that pair beautifully with timber flooring for residences that carry a definite air of sophistication. We’ve also thoughtfully considered how we could design natural light throughout every apartment with expansive, full-height windows, so there’s always a sense of luminosity – like a perpetual holiday. Of chief importance for us when designing Tennyson House was how we could incorporate that essence of everyday luxury. Beyond just an impressionable façade, it was about creating these beautiful moments throughout each residence that would allow people to feel a sense of joy when they wake up each morning. Artfully curated. Masterfully conceived. Director of KUD Architecture, Billy Kavellaris, discusses bringing the vision for Tennyson House to life. Firstly, what would it feel like to live here? Could you describe some of its more notable design features, both internally and externally? And how did materiality play a role? What was the inspiration behind the curved character of Tennyson House’s design? The curved character owes it’s origins to some of the Art Deco heritage of Elwood’s most iconic homes. There’s a lovely connection there between old and new that serves to ground the architecture within its context. What is it about the residences of Tennyson House that make it feel more like a traditional home and less like an apartment? In short – little details and large space. The inclusion of high-end appliances and highly considered design features, in tandem with generously-sized floorplans, is what sets it apart from traditional apartment design and pushes it into that realm of the standalone home Has the heritage of Elwood’s streets shaped your response in any way? Elwood is a suburb that embraces its heritage but does so in a very contemporary and timeless way. For us, Tennyson House embodies that approach by merging future-forward attributes with classic simplicity. It really is a statement of the kind of understated and relaxed opulence that goes hand in hand with life in Elwood – and that is something worth getting excited about.
