Profile
Housing Affordability is a key community
concern but one not-for-profit organisation
operating in Bunbury and the wider South
West was highlighted as a good example of
how to tackle affordable housing challenges
at the recent Critical Horizons – Housing the
South West in the 21
st
Century conference held
at Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre.
Access Housing is a Chamber Member and
provides a variety of affordable dwellings
across the South West region including
houses, units and a 37-room lodging house for
singles in the Bunbury CBD in addition to its
portfolio in Perth and the Peel region.
Access Housing’s South West Tenancy
Services Manager Matina Aitken, pictured
above, was excited to attend the Housing
conference held by the South West
Development Commission (SWDC) on April
1, which drew approximately 250 attendees.
Matina was particularly impressed with
the idea raised by conference speaker Dale
Alcock from Dale Alcock Homes that we
need affordably-built houses for affordable
housing; so we need to consider various
options and materials outside the traditional
double brick and tile home.
She said several mentions of Access
Housing’s activities within the South West
during keynote addresses at the conference
were welcome and showcased the Access
Housing’s commitment to providing
affordable housing in the region.
“As one of Western Australia’s leading
providers of affordable housing, Access
Housing is committed to growing the
supply of affordable housing in the South
West region and providing tenants with the
highest quality service,” Ms Aitken said.
“Access Housing currently has in excess of
200 residential leases under management
in the South West, housing more than 280
people. The company has also completed
four affordable housing developments in
the South West since 2013, yielding more
than 60 new affordable housing dwellings
to the region.
“Access Housing proudly works with
local South West businesses to not only
develop new affordable housing dwellings,
but also to maintain our properties for our
tenants and to support the local business
community.
“We encourage local businesses, property
developers and other service providers
within the Bunbury Chamber of Commerce
and Industries to contact us if they wish
to form a partnership with us and work
towards growing the affordable housing
sector further in the South West.”
Access Housing has a strong on-going
partnership with SWDC. This partnership
will soon see construction commence at
sites in Boyanup and Dardanup that will
provide new housing for local seniors.
The need for specialist over-55s
accommodation is growing, particularly in
regional areas, as the population ages and
people prefer to live independently and
within their local communities for as long
as possible.
“Projects such as our Boyanup and
Dardanup seniors housing developments
will allow for local seniors to remain
in their communities and continue to
enjoy their existing social, health and
other support networks whilst living in
accommodation better suited to their
needs,” Ms Aitken said.
